Embryo donation is a process that facilitates embryos either that were created by couples undergoing fertility treatment or that were created from donor sperm and donor eggs especially for donation to the infertile couples for a successful pregnancy. Donated embryo is also used in the study of reproductive medicine.
The following are some of the potential recipients of donated embryos:
• Both partners with untreatable infertility
• Untreatable infertility in single woman
• Patient experiencing repeated pregnancy loss
• Genetic disorders affecting one or both partners
Embryo donation follows similar clinical steps as routine frozen embryo transfer. The process begins with the preparation of the recipient with hormonal stimulation followed by the embryo transfer. The process also requires the recipient to undergo suitable medical and psychological screening tests.
The donors should share a detailed medical history and be tested for infectious diseases including HIV, hepatitis, syphilis, gonorrhoea, and chlamydia. A screen for genetic disease is also performed and may include the blood group of partners, thalassemia, sickle cell disease, cystic fibrosis, etc.
