Micro-TESE

Microscopic testicular sperm extraction or Micro-TESE refers to a process that directly takes sperm from the testicular tissue of a man’s reproductive system. The micro-TESE procedure aims to obtain the best quality sperm, get enough sperm to fertilize an egg from a woman and reduce damage to the reproductive organs.

Who needs micro-TESE?

Micro-TESE is considered for people who have abnormal sperm production due to previous testicular surgery, medical treatment, genetic problem and other male factor infertility issues.

How is micro-TESE done?

Micro-TESE is conducted in the male patient under general anesthesia. A cut is made in the testis to search for the tubules containing sperms. Each testicle is examined under a high-power operating microscope. The surgeon searches for seminiferous tubules especially the swollen tubules which contain sperm. Later the testis is closed with very fine dissolvable sutures. The patient can go home after the procedure and should be able to do normal activities within 1 to 2 weeks.
If sperms are found during the procedure, they are extracted and used immediately to fertilize an egg or the sperm cells can be frozen, stored for future reproductive treatment using ICSI.

How Important is Semen Analysis and Micro TESE in Male Infertility Treatment?

Frequently Asked Questions

  1. What is the Micro-TESE procedure?

Micro-TESE is a surgical sperm retrieval procedure used for men with very low or no sperm in their semen. Using a high-powered microscope, the surgeon carefully removes tiny testicular tissue samples to find healthy sperm, which can then be used or frozen for ICSI treatment.

  2. How long does Micro-TESE take?

The micro-TESE procedure usually takes about 2 to 3 hours. The exact time depends on how easily sperm-producing tubules are found. It is performed as a day-care procedure, and most patients can go home the same day.

  3. Is Micro-TESE painful?

Micro-TESE is performed under general anesthesia, so there is no pain during the procedure. Mild discomfort or swelling may occur afterward, but it is usually manageable with pain medication. Most men recover well and return to normal activities within 1 to 2 weeks.

  4. What is the difference between TESE and Micro-TESE?

TESE removes testicular tissue without magnification, while micro-TESE uses a microscope to locate sperm-producing tubules precisely. Micro-TESE improves sperm retrieval rates and minimizes testicular damage, making it the preferred option for severe male infertility cases.

  5. How successful is Micro-TESE?

Micro-TESE offers higher sperm retrieval rates than standard TESE, especially in men with non-obstructive azoospermia. Success depends on the underlying cause of infertility. When sperm are found, they can be used with ICSI to achieve pregnancy.
