Product of Conception (POC)

Product of Conception (POC) refers to placental and/or fetal tissue that remains in the uterus after a miscarriage, planned pregnancy termination or preterm/term delivery. It is one of the common causes of postpartum bleeding. It may also cause endometritis (redness in the uterus), attachment within the uterus and lowers future fertility.

What are the symptoms in women with POC?

The common symptoms of POC are
•    Uterine bleeding – after a miscarriage, slight bleeding is a normal sign, but it may indicate a retained POC if it’s heavy and prolonged.
•    Fever, tenderness in the uterus, abdominal pain - may indicate a retained POC if they continue for more than a few days.

What if a retained POC is suspected?

The diagnosis of POC remains a major challenge. If a retained POC is suspected, it is diagnosed based on different clinical signs and symptoms and certain tests, including physical examination, ultrasound, or hysteroscopy (a procedure in which the womb can be internally visualized look utilizing a thin, lighted tube).

Who should use the POC test?

POC is suggested for couples with miscarriage coupled with:
•    Family history of a chromosomal abnormality
•    Advanced maternal age (more than 35 years)
•    Frequent spontaneous miscarriage
•    Previous pregnancy with chromosomal deformity
•    Anomalous results of maternal serum screening test
•    Abnormal findings in an ultrasound

What are the benefits of POC test?

•    POC clarifies the risk for upcoming miscarriages or other chromosomal anomalies in a child during birth.
•    An abnormal POC may help in preventing the requirement for a broad infertility examination.
•    This technique examines the fetal tissues derived from a miscarriage to detect if the miscarriage was due to Chromosomal Aneuploidy.
•    POC also gives significant data regarding the possible reasons behind miscarriage. This is very helpful in planning any future pregnancy.
•    POC is beneficial for couples going through assisted reproduction treatments.
