Sonohysterogram (SHG)

SHG or Sonohysterogram is an ultrasound scan test used to evaluate the reproductive organs within the female pelvis. A thin catheter is introduced through the neck of the womb (cervix), into the womb (uterus). A small amount of fluid is introduced through this catheter, which outlines the cavity of the uterus, helping identify various abnormalities. . This test generally takes less than 30 minutes.

What does SHG detect?

  • Abnormal shape of the uterus
  • Irregular growths inside the uterus, including polyps or fibroids
  • Presence of scar tissue inside the uterus

How is SHG carried out?

  • SHG is generally performed after the completion of the menstrual cycle. In females not menstruating (including postmenopausal women or who are on medicines suppressing the menstrual cycle), the test can be performed at any time.
  • Firstly, a vaginal ultrasound evaluation is done.
  • The next step is introducing a thin catheter, via the cervix, into the uterine cavity.
  • Sterile saline solution is inserted into the uterus and the Ultrasound scanning performed..
  • The uterus gets filled with the saline solution, assisting in outlining the uterine walls and cavity. In this way, abnormalities can be visualized including polyps, fibroids, or scar tissue inside the uterus.

Is SHG safe to perform?

SHG is a generally a safe procedure. Some women can experience cramps or pain. Pelvic infection is a very rare but potentially severe complication of an SHG procedure.
